History of Dubai Airport
The history of the airport in Dubai started in July 1937. It was when an agreement was signed for a flying boat base. The Flying Boats started operating once a week. By Feb 1938, there were 4 flying boats a week. In the 1940s, flying from Dubai was operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation.
The building of the airport was started by the ruler of Dubai in 1959. It was opened on 30 Sep 1960 through a runway that is made of compacted sand. 3 turning areas, an apron, and a small terminal were added to the airport by Costain.

Dubai Airport has built a flower center to handle flower exports and imports. As Dubai is a major hub for the import & export of flowers, the airport needs a special area. The first phase was done in 2004 for $50 million. The center when flower center has a floor area of 1,100,000 sq ft, including export chambers and offices. The handling capacity is more than 300,000 tonnes of product. The area is maintained at a temperature of just 2 to 4 °C.
After the opening of the airport, the area around Al Garhoud district started to grow fast in terms of good connectivity.
